Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis tends to result in pain, especially later in the day after significant use. Stiffness is common in the mornings when you first wake up. If you are inactive for extended periods of time during the day, you may also experience stiffness then.
Inflammation and warmth can also occur after movement. In severe cases, patients experience a total loss of cartilage. This can cause friction between the bones, which can lead to pain when you’re resting or in motion.
Types of Osteoarthritis
- Gonarthrosis. This is osteoarthritis of the knee. In most cases, both knees are affected. Excess weight and sports are the two biggest factors. Physical therapy is the initial treatment, followed by prescription drugs and surgery.
- Coxarthrosis. This is a type of osteoarthritis that affects the hip joint. There are two types. Primitive coxarthrosis affects those over 60 years of age who have a normal hip. Secondary coxarthrosis occurs in younger patients who have hip dysplasia. Non-drug treatments play a huge role in treatment.
- Rhizarthrosis. This is osteoarthritis of the thumb. It is fairly common, mainly affecting postmenopausal women. The most common symptom is pain, which is relieved by rest. Splints and exercises are used initially, followed by medications and surgery.
