08 Aug MUA for Knee Stiffness: Study Results
Manipulation under anesthesia, or MUA, is one of the latest additions to the offerings of Dr. Nikesh Seth. It’s exactly what it sounds like: Manipulating the body while the patient is under anesthesia, which allows for more range of motion (ROM) and optimal results since the patient can’t “fight” the manipulation. MUA is being recommended for a wide range of issues, including knee stiffness.
Stiffness in this high-impact joint can be caused by many issues, including knee arthroplasty (knee surgery). Stiffness after this procedure is so common that it can be debilitating and very frustrating for the patient. Before MUA, those with stiff knees might undergo intensive physiotherapy to increase range of motion. If that fails, MUA can be a fantastic option.
A study of MUA in patients with knee stiffness was published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and included 21 patients who underwent MUA during a six-month period. The average patient was 62 years old. All were diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis before arthroplasty was performed. In total, the patients underwent 16 primary total knee replacements and three revision total knee replacements while just one patient underwent medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and joint replacement.
General anesthesia and muscle relaxation were used in 20 of the patients. Patients had an average of 13.2 weeks of MUA post-surgery. Before MUA, doctors were able to achieve an improved range of motion post-surgery of 60.2 degrees, but after MUA the average ROM was 91.9 degrees. None of the patients in the study had any complications, and 20 of the 21 patients enjoyed some type of improvement from MUA. The researchers recommend that MUA should be the primary means of improving range of motion following physiotherapy.
