Long term, nagging pain can affect your life in so many ways. It may be time to get serious so that you can start enjoying your life once again. With epidural steroid injections, you may quickly be relieved of the pain that you have been putting up with for way too long. Read on to learn how they work and the benefits they provide. How an Epidural Steroid Injection Works
The injection places the steroid into the spine, in the epidural space. Saline or anesthetic may be used as well to flush out inflammation. The job of the steroid is to minimize the inflammation, as it is the inflammation causing the pain. Three commonly used steroids are Dexamethasone, riamcinolone acetonide and Methylprednisolone acetate.
If you have a type of pain that tends to radiate – like sciatica – epidural steroid injections work extremely well. They control inflammation, which can affect the legs and feet and cause nerve root irritation. They also inhibit immune response so that the body does not react to the inflammation with pain.
Benefits of Epidural Steroid Injections
Unlike oral painkillers, steroid injections are focused on the pain site and have few side effects. The injection is placed directly at the site of the pain, so many times the pain relief is immediate
Steroid injections also have the ability to get rid of chemicals and other causes of inflammation. This reduces pain and swelling.
